ATG Start Codons in London
by Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei

The Londonist always impresses me with its clever commentary on the urban scene, but I was doubly impressed today when Matt mentioned start codons in his post about ATG graffiti artists in northwest London.
Start codons are DNA sequences that are translated into mRNA and signal where protein translation should begin in the cell cytoplasm. See how good you are at finding start codon ATG (amino acid methionine) in this partial chromosome 1 sequence from NOVA Online.

Hi Hsien-Hsien,
Thanks for picking up on my post. I’m a biochemist by background, so ATG’s graffiti has amused me for a while.
When I’m not wandering the streets looking for unusual street art, I edit Nature Network London (which I notice you’ve joined up to). I’d love to hear your opinions about this new site if you have time. It’s still really new and under beta development, but we have big plans…drop me a line if you find time.
We’re also looking for scientists interested in blogging on Nature Network, so if you or any of your readers might be interested in having a blog on a Nature site, contact me at m.brown - at - nature - dot - com (or if you want to catch me this weekend, i.am.mattbrown - at - gmail - dot - com)
Thanks, and best of luck with the blog!
Matt from Londonist…and Nature
