This week’s fabulous lab t-shirt offering is from Blaine over at The Genetic Genealogist.

(Click on the photos for a larger version.)
Here’s what Blaine had to say about his geeky lab t-shirt:
In the summer of 2002 I was a TA for the 3-week Yeast Genetics & Genomics course at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. Every year the students and the three TAs design a memorial t-shirt, pictures of which I’m sending along to you for your t-shirt series.
On the left is a budding yeast cell (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), and on the right are 4 haploid spores inside an ascus (collectively called a ‘tetrad’, which is the product of meiosis). Yeast can be either haploid or diploid, and in poor nutrient conditions diploid cells under meiosis to form hardy spores.
The budding yeast cell is hitting on the tetrad by complimenting its “ascusâ€. The tetrad is clearly not interested and responds “ura- leu- ser-†(i.e “you’re a loserâ€). Ura, leu, and ser stand for uracil, leucine, and serine, three auxotrophix markers used by yeast geneticists. Trust me, if you’re a yeast geneticist, this at least elicits a chuckle!!
Is that cute or what? I know you’ve got to have at least one such lab t-shirt knocking around. Please email me yours! I’d love to feature you too.
