Eye on DNA Links for 4 July 2007

• Eye on DNA now features a Healia search widget in the sidebar. I previously reviewed the health search engine and created a screencast comparing Healia to Medstory and Google. (In exchange for featuring the widget, Healia displays a rotating link to Eye on DNA in their search results.)
• Dr. Roger Anderson at Modern Magellans tagged me to reveal 8 random things but first I want to say that his book series and company name are very creative with initials ATCG and AUG, respectively. And here’s a little extra about me:

  1. I don’t like to think about money.
  2. I read an average of two books a month – one fiction, one non-fiction.
  3. In my lifetime, I’ve played piano, flute, violin, and string bass all fairly well.
  4. I was my high school yearbook’s computer editor.
  5. I spent two summers as a camp counselor at Camp Okizu.
  6. My husband and I got married right out of college.
  7. I am 5′ 7″ (170 cm).
  8. I taught English to a Japanese woman who spent part of her childhood in Manchuria during World War II. Only after I read about that time period in Wild Swans did I realize what her life must have been like.

• Freeman Dyson writes about Our Biotech Future in The New York Review of Books. He’s about as optimistic as James Watson when it comes to the power of genomics. Remember Dr. Watson’s stint as spokesperson for Monsanto? He said, “Recombinant DNA is the safest technology I’ve ever heard.” Dr. Dyson believes personal genomics will be “a new art form as creative as painting or sculpture.” Party on! I’m not sure if a text link would qualify for the program since the application specifically says that you have to display a Healia search widget….

They offer a text link as one of the options on http://www.healia.com/healia/en/healia_tools.jsp?

Maybe I’m misinterpreting their offer and that it does indeed have to be a search widget you add.

Yes but I think the text link and badge are for promotional purposes only. The way the link exchange is worded seems to be only for those with the search widget. Let me email and ask.

Hi David and Hsien,

Our policy is that only the search widgets are eligible for the rotating links — on the Healia Links page (http://www.healia.com/healia/en/healia_tools.jsp?) only the top two boxes of code include the “Eligible for Healia Links” note.

However! We look at each participating blog on a case-by-case basis and we’ve made exceptions. Denver Doc Online, for example, has a text link to our site. But because it’s so prominently displayed, we included this blog in the program.

We will be making the search widget a bit more descriptive (indicating that it is a search for health information) and this change will be rolling out very soon.
