Geeky DNA T-Shirts – The Sonic Hedgehog Gene
by Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei
Posted July 10, 2007 in Geeky DNA T-shirts
This fugly yellow-orange t-shirt is the last in my DNA t-shirt collection. It’s a decade old and celebrates the 1996 Nature Genetics paper by Roessler E, et al. linking the human Sonic Hedgehog gene to holoprosencephaly. Even worse than the color, I can’t remember where I snagged the shirt and don’t know what BHSC stands for – Bachelor of Health Sciences?
Last year, the sonic hedgehog gene came under attack by the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) Gene Nomenclature Committee for being unduly “inappropriate, demeaning, and pejorative.” The gene symbols are staying the same but the names will be changed where appropriate.
A look at the back of the t-shirt below the fold.

A shirt advertising a publication – that is a terrific idea! You could wear it at meetings, presentations, graduations, birthday parties, and even to work. Well, maybe not to work.
Scientists are so egotistical.
What will they think of next? Adding marques to the back and front of cars, brand labels to clothes even, and what about shopping bags that advertise the place you shopped?
Yep, BHSc is a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree

My question is what does the Sonic Hedgehog gene have to do with a BHSC (they didn’t lowercase the ‘c’ for some reason)?! If only I could remember where I got that shirt from….
