Science Foo (SciFoo) Camp is on this weekend at the Googleplex in Mountain View. Although I’m not there (*sob*), DNA Network members Thomas Goetz, Jonathan Eisen, and Alex Palazzo are along with Euan Adie of Nature. Hopefully they’ll let us know what all cool stuff SciFoo campers ranted and raved about. I even saw Martha Stewart with Charles Simonyi there in Esther Dyson’s Flickr photostream!

Speaking of abandoned DNA, Belgian police salvaged a drink bottle that an eyewitness believes belonged to Madeleine McCann, the four-year-old British girl who was abducted from her family’s hotel room in Portugal three months ago. DNA results are expected next week and police are asking for information on a Volvo with Belgian plates starting with VOV.

French blog Schizodoxe and Jhay Rocas at The Four Eye-Eyed Journal share their thoughts on newborn genetic screening.

More discussion on the usefulness (or uselessness) of genomic technology over at The Rocketfish Manifesto. Snarky and negative but I suppose we could all use a dose of that once in a while.

In this week’s New Scientist, Robert Matthews of Biopattern is urging researchers to be more vigilant about obtaining consent from study participants. Blaine of The Genetic Genealogist touches upon this issue as well when discussing the limitations of anonymizing DNA samples in genomic databases.
