DNA Direct Unveils New Genetics Forum at MedHelp
by Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei
Posted September 4, 2007 in DNA and Disease, DNA in General
Congratulations to the teams at DNA Direct and MedHelp! Together, they have introduced a genetics forum where anyone can participate. DNA Direct’s certified genetic counselor, Lisa Kessler, will be leading the forum and will personally answer all questions.
The genetics forum was just launched a few hours ago and already the first questions have been posted by eaglesJW:
My neice was diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome. Does this mean that I could have children with Fragile X Syndrome? If so, is there some test that I can have to find out whether I carry this gene?
If you’ve ever wondered where you can find a genetic counselor, look no further. Lisa is at MedHelp waiting for you!
NB: I have been working as a consultant for DNA Direct since May.

How much traffic does MedHelp get in a day? I never heard of this website before.
It’s a good thing that this fourm was created. However, as I’m sure Lisa already knows, that the person asking a question on this forum should still see a genetic counselor in person, or on the phone, when they have questions since the person asking a question might not give information that is important in giving the best answer to their question possible.
MedHelp is huge and has been on the Web since 1994. It has a vibrant community and medical experts who lead the forums. Their Alexa ranking is currently 8,258 and they have a Web reach of about 1.8% (percent of global internet users who access this site).
And I agree with the second part of your comment…I think. It almost sounds like a tongue twister there.
This is a great service. I run a genetics website which includes an Ask a geneticist section. I occasionally get a question that might require a genetic counselor’s experience and I will be happy to send them there!
You do a great job of answering general genetics questions, Barry! I sometimes dig through your archives when I have a question myself.
Thanks Hsien, I am glad to be of some use! We were pretty popular until our website got hacked by some guys in England somewhere (or so they said). Now my traffic is down to 1/3 of what it was before. Sigh. At least I now back everything up!
So that’s what happened! A few weeks ago, I went to read something and it said the page was no available because you guys were reorganizing or something. @#! hackers
