Kerri, I don't know much about my family medical history either. That's why I think genetic testing can tell us so much more without relying on incomplete memory and lack of access to relatives.

Krissy,

I'm not sure all women's cancers are neglected. There certainly has been a lot of attention paid to breast cancer, for example.

I'm so sorry to hear about your best friend's friend. Life can certainly be nasty, brutish, and short. :(

Yes, it still counts as family history but late-onset disease like the your wife's grandmother would not predict as high of a risk in family members as early-onset.

I can't leave an original comment, but I can reply to a comment. Sorry, David, this is an original comment.

My best friend's friend from high school was treated for cervical cancer, was undertreated, and now has two months to live. She's 27. I admire the women here for giving an interview and I'm thinking that my friend might want to post a follow-up at Speckblog. I'll ask her.

Women's cancers are horrible, if only because they are so far behind the others in understanding of pathology and treatment. After all, girls are "weird" anyway, right?

Yeah, sometimes I think it's better that I don't know half of my medical history. Just would give me more things to worry about. But if I'm ever faced with cancer, I hope I have the same spunk and courage as Carolyn!

My wife'e grandmother had breast cancer in her later years, but lived well into her 80s. Does it count as a family history if those with the disease were well beyond their three-score-and-ten?
