- The randomly selected winner of the October Eye on DNA Comment Contest is Dr. Ramunas Janavicius of Cancer Genetics! He wins a copy of J. Craig Venter’s new book - A Life Decoded: My Genome: My Life
- Two genetic markers in the 8q24 region of chromosome 8–rs7008482 and rs16901979–have been linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer in African Americans.
- Along with the US and UK, Australia is establishing a DNA database for its troops. Troops will be asked to volunteer a blood sample for DNA identification when dental or fingerprint evidence cannot be used to identify deceased remains.
- Australia is really getting on the DNA bandwagon. Like bus drivers in the UK, Australian bus drivers are being given DNA kits to catch riders who spit on them.
Mick Layt from the Rail Tram and Bus Union:
It’s like someone walking into someone’s office walking up to them tapping them on the shoulder and spitting at them. A dog act and we’ve got to back the police and try and get these people through the courts and I think it’s a serious matter and it’s just growing.
- I’m starting to overdose on Craig Venter. He’s on The Colbert Show again. Colbert for President!
