Physicians train for 4 years after undergraduate school and then do a residency which is another 3-7 years. So it is approximately 7 years of training after undergraduate education. In medical school students have a course which is often half a year long in pharmacology. In addition they are tested on pharmacology knowledge on all 3 steps of their licensing exam. Then they use medications throughout their residency and fellowship training. They prescribe and advise patients on medications daily. Medical Geneticists with an MD have the same training. There are generalists who must learn about nearly all medications and specialists who often learn only about their specialty AFTER they do generalists training. So I would say they are ideally suited to do this.

How many physicians and geneticists are trained in pharmacology? My understanding is that physicians learn the pharmacology of their particular area, such as oncology, orthopedics, internal medicine. No specialist learns everything about all areas.

Great Interview.
Best of Luck Elissa. Quick question about PGx though. Do you think counselors, who may have not trained in pharmacology could be giving these risk assessments as well?

Quote: "The event runs from April 8 through April 17 and is meant to “celebrate the promise of genetic health.” Navigenics is now open for business and you can become a “member” for $2, 500 including first year’s subscription. The subsequent ongoing subscription rate is $250 per year."

Sure, I have $2,500 sitting around to become a member.

The rest of the interview was fine.
